COMMUNITY CAR SEAT CHECK Saturday, September 20th 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Where: Schertz Playscape (YMCA) 629 Westchester Drive
IS YOUR CAR SEAT INSTALLED CORRECTLY?
With Child Passenger Safety Week (September 21–27) right around the corner, the Schertz Police Department is reminding parents and caregivers to double-check that their child’s car seat is properly installed and appropriate for their age, height, and weight.
1) CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAR SEAT FOR YOUR CHILD. With Child Passenger Safety Week (September 21–27) right around the corner, the Schertz Police Department is reminding parents and caregivers to double-check that their child’s car seat is properly installed and appropriate for their age, height, and weight.
2) USE ONLY ONE INSTALLATION METHOD. There are two safe ways to install a car seat: using a seatbelt or the LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children). Never use both at the same time—choose one method and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
3) CHECK FOR A SECURE FIT EVERY TIME. A properly adjusted harness is key to keeping your child safe. Straps should lie flat and be snug—tight enough that you can’t pinch any slack at the shoulder. Make sure the chest clip is positioned at armpit level.
4) KNOW WHEN IT’S TIME TO SWITCH. Always check your car seat’s label for weight and height limits. As your child grows, they’ll eventually need to transition to a booster seat and then to a seatbelt. Don’t forget to check the seat’s expiration date as well.
If you're unsure whether your car seat is installed correctly, we’re here to help. The Schertz Police Department is hosting a free Community Car Seat Check. Certified technicians will be on-site to inspect your car seat and help with adjustments. Let’s work together to make sure every ride is a safe one. Can't make the event? You can schedule a personal car seat check with Officer Anna Kraft, a certified National Child Passenger Safety Technician, by calling (210) 619-1264. Officer Kraft is passionate about helping families protect their little ones on the road.
